Some of our paints and lacquers are two pack, or 2K, products. This page explains what that means and how to use these products safely.
What two pack (2K) means
Two pack products are mixed with a separate hardener before use. Once mixed, they contain isocyanates, which are used to give a hard, durable finish. Isocyanates are released into the air as a fine spray during application and can cause serious and permanent harm to the lungs if breathed in, including occupational asthma.
HSE guidance
The Health and Safety Executive is clear that two pack products containing isocyanates should only be sprayed in a properly designed spray booth, with the operator wearing air fed breathing equipment. They should never be sprayed in an open workshop, garage or on a driveway, and never with just a dust mask or a standard respirator, which do not protect against isocyanate vapour.
Who two pack products are for
Our 2K paints, primers and lacquers are supplied for use by bodyshops and trained professionals who have the correct booth, extraction and air fed equipment, and who follow their own risk assessment and control of substances hazardous to health (COSHH) procedures.
What to use at home instead
If you are working at home, choose our one pack products, such as aerosol paints, touch up pens and one pack lacquers. These do not contain isocyanates and are intended for careful home use. Even so, always spray in a well ventilated area, away from other people and animals, follow the instructions on the tin or can, and wear suitable eye and skin protection.
